Elpida Introduces 1Gb XDR DRAM with 29GB per Second Memory Bandwidth

Elpida, the Japan based memory manufacturer, introduced industry’s first 1Gb XDR DRAM memory based on x32-bit configuration. The memory runs at up to 7.2GHz, which is faster than any memory technology available today. The XDR chip is capable of 28.8GB per second memory bandwidth, which is nine times faster than DDR3 memory and more than twice as fast as GDDR5 memory chip.
Elpida has used 65nm process technology to manufacture the new XDR chip. The chip uses just 1.5V and has x32-bit interface. In comparison to Elpida’s previous XDR DRAM the new chip consumes 35-40 percent less power and requires less space also.
As the new XDR chip has very high data bandwidth, Elpida expects that the new chip will be used in media devices, set-top boxes, game consoles, high-end graphics cards and Blu-ray player where larger amounts of data processing is required.
